PROPOSAL FOR NEW PROJECTS
Self-sustain for Adult Literacy Program ALP and estimated budget
The focus of Sahayatri Nepal is to empower women, men and youth to become self-sufficient in the community through an education and livelihood program. The organization has been working with our partner organization "Nepal Empowered" since 2015 to achieve these goals.
We work together with people from the community and support them according to their wishes, needs, aspirations and possibilities. The literacy program for adults is one of these very empowering projects, which has a very big impact in the community in KarkiGaun.
The ALP course runs six days a week. And we have a very committed group of married women who come 3 hours a day to read and write. They are 100% supported by the partnership between Sahayatri Nepal and Nepal Empowered. It includes the rent of the classrooms, the salary of the teachers, books and notebooks, bags and all necessary writing materials.
Sahayatri Nepal wants to ensure that all necessary expenses for ALP can be covered by a self-sustaining project in the near future. Various types of projects are possible. These include ideas such as growing coffee, knitting and selling eggs. Most promising, however, because of its suitable location, is goat breeding, which is anchored in the culture here.
Estimated budget for the start of a goat farm with 25 goats
-Construction of a goat farm
-Land rental
-Purchase of goats
-Transport
-Planting grass
An estimated budget of $7000 (seven thousand dollars) is required to complete the project.
From the start of the project, an income can be generated within a year and a half to cover the expenses of a center for adult literacy programs. Later it will generate correspondingly more income for the development of goat farms and can help other ALP centers.
Adding a new classroom to improve the advanced course in the adult literacy program
It is now 14 months since Sahayatri Nepal started the adult literacy program. This year we taught letters, alphabets and numbers and developed words and sentences. With this the women have completed the basic level and are now ready for an advanced course.
In order to enable an advanced course in addition to the basic level, Sahayatri Nepal is planning a new classroom.
Required material and estimated budget for setting up a new classroom
-Books
-Materials for stationery
-Tables
-Carpet
-Whiteboard
-Notebooks for students and teachers
-Black ink for teachers
Approximately $500 is required to purchase the above materials.
New admission open
We have 25 new students who are ready to enter the new academic season 2020. They all belong to the DALIT, who unofficially are often classified as "untouchables" in the lowest caste of the Nepalese social system. They are the most underprivileged and poorest people in the country.
So far, only Tamang women participate in the literacy program. But now Dalit women have also been inspired by this and want to participate in the program, which Sahayatri Nepal welcomes very much.
The following material is needed for the new admission:
-Books
-Booklets
-Notebooks
-Stationery
-Schoolbags
For the purchase of those materials about $600 are needed.
New literacy program for adults in Karkale or Champani village
A group of women leaders from the village of Karkale and the village of Champani has often asked Sahayatri Nepal to set up literacy programs in their villages as well. Due to the distance and time constraints, they are unable to participate in the ALP program in KarkiGaun and therefore wish to have a branch of the ALP class in their own village.
Since Sahayatri Nepal has only limited resources, this wish cannot yet be fulfilled. With new resources, however, the ALP program could be extended to another neighboring village with 40 participants.
Required material and estimated budget for setting up ALP in another village
-Books
-Notebooks
-Stationery tables
-Carpet
-Black ink for teachers
-School bags
For the purchase of the above mentioned materials about 1000 dollars are needed. Room rent and a teacher salary of $300 are not included. $300

New School building supported by the Government of Japan after the Earthquake 2015 (under Nepal Govt. supervision)
Background
In Nepal there are state and private schools and universities. In the case of state institutions, the government covers all costs incurred, so participation is free of charge. The government provides large sums of money for high-quality education, but faces great challenges and problems in the school system. Parents who can afford it send their children to private schools.
The Shree-Jaya Buddha Primary School in KarkiGaun is a state school. Students from the Tamang and Dalit ethnic minority are enrolled there.
Why is a school uniform required?
The new school season starts in April and every year the school administration committee and teachers look for donors for the school uniform. In 2019 45 students were selected for the uniform, which was provided by one of the organizations. The rest of the students were left empty-handed, which many students rightly perceive as unfair. Therefore, we hope for support this year to provide all students with a school uniform.
What are the approximate costs for the school uniform?
There are 72 students in the school. A school uniform (shirt and pants) costs about Rs2000/ $20, so the total cost is about $1440. If a pair of shoes and a bag are added, the cost doubles, i.e. about $2880.
